Welcome from the Head

Thank you for taking the time to learn about us. At Abbot’s Hill, we know every child well. That’s why their strengths shape how we teach them, not just their results.

Before becoming Head, I led our Senior School. Before that, I held leadership roles in two other schools. So I’ve spent most of my career watching what actually helps a child thrive. And it’s rarely just the syllabus. Instead, it’s a teacher who notices when something’s off, or a curriculum that flexes to the pupil in front of it. That’s what we build here.

Wellbeing isn’t a slogan for us. It’s the reason our Pastoral team works closely alongside teaching staff. As a result, academic stretch and personal support come from people who already know your child. High expectations and real support aren’t in tension at Abbot’s Hill. Instead, they run side by side. Our Year 11 leavers prove it: they leave confident, grounded, and ready for what’s next.

Learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. We offer over fifty clubs, from Lego Engineering to Cheerleading, alongside music, sport, drama and community projects. So pupils get real room to find out what they’re good at, not just what’s on the timetable.

Sisters Alice, Katrine and Mary Baird founded Abbot’s Hill in 1912, and we still hold to their founding motto, Vita et Virtute — Strength and Power. Our 76-acre site sits on the outskirts of Hemel Hempstead, within easy reach of St Albans, Berkhamsted and Kings Langley too.

We’re growing, too. Our first boys joined the Prep School in September 2025. Senior boys are joining Year 7 in September 2026, as we become fully co-educational.

We’ve taken this step carefully, because we believe every child deserves what Abbot’s Hill offers. Our partnership with the Mill Hill Education Group adds further depth, connecting us to a wider network of schools that share our values.

In 2024, Abbot’s Hill proudly became the tenth school to join the Mill Hill Education Group (MHEG), a family of British independent day and boarding schools which educate, nurture and support their pupils, producing well-rounded and well equipped adults ready for life beyond school.

What an incredible day celebrating the cultures, experiences and traditions that make our school community so unique.

Students immersed themselves in a range of exciting activities, including a vibrant dance workshop, a lively steel pans session, Around the World language bingo, and thought-provoking discussions in Stories Beyond the Stereotypes. We were also honoured to welcome keynote speaker Lola Jaye, who inspired students to celebrate identity, belonging and the power of storytelling.

Our cooking workshops were a huge success, with students preparing delicious dishes from around the world, including Filipino spring rolls and traditional Moroccan tagine. The celebrations continued with our Country Showcase, where classrooms were transformed through a fantastic door decorating competition highlighting countries from across the globe.

The day was a wonderful reminder that by celebrating our differences, we build a stronger, kinder and more vibrant community.

This year, we’ve worked alongside local state and independent schools, charities, care homes and families to create meaningful opportunities that inspire, connect and make a lasting difference.
 
From welcoming over 600 children from 12 local schools to our free “Come and...” enrichment events, to supporting local primary schools through our pupil mentoring programme, volunteering in care homes, hosting community events and raising funds for charity, our pupils have embraced every opportunity to learn through service and collaboration.
 
These experiences don’t just benefit our partners, they help our pupils grow into confident, compassionate young people who understand the value of giving back and making a positive impact.
 
A huge thank you to our pupils, staff, partner schools, charities, families and the wider community. This recognition belongs to all of you, and we’re excited to continue building these partnerships in the years ahead.
