Physical Education

At Abbot’s Hill girls enjoy a rich and varied sporting programme and they embrace the opportunities and challenges with boundless energy and unfailing enthusiasm. Our extensive sporting facilities and the dedication, experience and high calibre of our coaches enable each student to follow her sporting ambition and to flourish and excel in her chosen field. Many girls are chosen to play at County, Regional and National level.

All pupils participate in structured Physical Education throughout their time at Abbot’s Hill, as part of the curriculum. This consists of three, hour long lessons of Physical Education per week, with these lessons supplemented by an extensive extra-curricular programme.

In Years 7 and 8 core PE lessons include lacrosse, netball, gymnastics, swimming, multi-sports and health-related fitness in the winter. In Years 9, 10 and 11 lacrosse, netball, trampolining, swimming and volleyball are taught.

In the Summer term, all girls have lessons in athletics, tennis, cricket, rounders and swimming.

From Years 7-11 pupils have the opportunity to be involved in the following activities, either as part of the curriculum or within the extra-curricular programme:

From Year 10 pupils have the opportunity to take a full course GCSE in Physical Education to further their knowledge on how to lead a healthy, active lifestyle. Pupils also have the opportunity to become a Sports Leader and gain a Level 2 Sports Leader Certificate. Pupils also have the option to take GCSE Dance which covers a wide range of genres.

We are very fortunate to have exceptional facilities here at Abbot’s Hill and our generously sized grounds provide extensive opportunities for outdoor and indoor sporting endeavours. These include the purpose-built Dame Kelly Holmes Sports Centre, athletics track, four rounders pitches as well as:

  • Four lacrosse pitches
  • Five full size netball courts and one junior court
  • Five tennis courts
  • Sports Hall with:
    • County netball court
    • Full volleyball court
    • Four badminton courts
    • Basketball court
  • Dance Studio
  • Several hoops for basketball and netball
  • Swimming pool, with a retractable roof covering for use all year round
