Welcome to Abbot’s Hill

Abbot’s Hill was named The Sunday Times Parent Power Independent 11–16 School of the Year 2026 — recognition of what we believe matters most: pupils who are genuinely happy, and genuinely well-prepared for what comes next.

Founded in 1912, we’ve spent over a century getting the balance right. Strong GCSE outcomes sit alongside a co-curricular programme spanning sport, the arts, Duke of Edinburgh and outdoor learning — because we don’t think academic ambition and a well-rounded childhood are in competition. We think they depend on each other.

We’re also on an exciting journey: our first boys joined the Prep School in September 2025, and Senior boys join Year 7 in September 2026 as we become fully co-educational. It’s a big step, and one we’re taking carefully, for all the right reasons.

Set across 76 acres of Hertfordshire countryside between Hemel Hempstead and Kings Langley — with easy reach of St Albans, Harpenden and Berkhamsted — Abbot’s Hill offers an education for boys and girls from nursery right through to GCSE.

Whatever your child’s strengths, we want them to leave us knowing what they’re capable of, and ready to make the most of it.

“Abbot’s Hill is the antithesis of a pushy school and prides itself on not putting unnecessary pressure on the girls. The upshot? Excellent GCSE results.”

Mission

To foster a community in which all individuals are happy and inspired to live purposeful and fulfilling lives while remaining true to our founding values of strength and character.

Vision

A first choice school with outstanding environments in which to work, learn and play. We embrace diversity and provide an education fit for the modern world by challenging everyone in our community to be confident in who they are, develop strength of character and to become active, compassionate citizens who make significant and lasting contributions to others throughout their lives.

Values

We have developed our beliefs and behaviours as a whole community into a set of values and actions that guide our Prep and Senior Schools. These values are regularly reviewed as a collective community of children and staff to ensure that they reflect our ethos and vision.

“What struck us immediately was how well the staff know every child as an individual. Our child settled in within weeks, and we put that entirely down to the warmth of the pastoral team.”

Life Beyond the Classroom

A School day full of possibility
At Abbot’s Hill, we develop the whole child. Pupils leave us prepared not only for academic success, but also equipped with the skills needed to become active, compassionate citizens who make significant and lasting contributions to others throughout their lives. We do this by providing an innovative, relevant and ambitious academic curriculum, and by offering a broad, challenging and aspirational co-curricular programme for all.
