Moving on to Senior School

Abbot’s Hill is an all-through school, providing consistent, high-quality education from the nursery to GCSE years. Most of our pupils continue their journey from Prep to Senior School, moving on with confidence in a familiar environment.

The move up from Prep to Senior School should be exciting, so we hold transition events including senior school tours, Year 7 Q&As and taster sessions and a ‘Move Up Day’ to make sure everyone is ready for the next chapter in their story.

The final two years at Prep are seen as a period of preparation for the move to Senior School; the aim is for all pupils to enter Year 7 with confidence, well-equipped to embrace the opportunities and challenges of this next phase in their academic life. With a strong focus on teamwork, independence, friendship and kindness in Year 6, pupils take on increasing responsibilities and leadership roles, leaving Abbot’s Hill Prep School prepared, academically and emotionally, to take the next step of their educational journey.

Admissions and Transition

All pupils are automatically entered for a Senior School place. The transition to Senior School begins in the Spring Term of Year 5 when the pupils spend a day in the Senior School, trying out subjects and meeting pupils and teachers. In the Summer Term, parents are invited to discuss the next stage in their child’s education with the Head of Prep. Pupil and parent interviews take place in the Autumn Term.

We offer a seamless transition from Year 6 to Year 7. A formal Induction Day and a Welcome Evening for parents are followed by a family picnic in July and a programme of events just prior to the start of term in September, including an overnight camp-out in the school grounds.

There are many ways to get a taste of life at Abbot’s Hill – whatever you choose, you can be sure of a warm welcome. We are very proud of everything that goes on each day in our classrooms, outside in the 76 acres of parkland and through our extensive co-curricular programme, and our pupils are always keen to meet prospective families and chat about their experiences at school. We know that our pupils are our very best ambassadors!

Our Clan Dance Competition was an incredible showcase of talent, teamwork, and dedication.

Our senior students have been working hard, practising and rehearsing to come together and deliver some amazing performances. The competition was tough, and every clan shone on stage, bringing energy, creativity, and spirit to their routines.

A huge congratulations to this year’s winners, Macneil.

Thank you as well to our Marketing Club for putting together such a fantastic reel and capturing the event so brilliantly.

We were delighted to welcome local historian Richard Westwood to Abbot’s Hill School to speak with our Year 6 students about the rich history of our site.

The visit, kindly arranged by Mrs Kneller, gave the girls a fascinating insight into John Dickinson, who built Abbot’s Hill as a family home, and how it has evolved into the school we know today.

Students also enjoyed learning about our Observatory, which once housed a telescope, adding another layer to the school’s unique heritage.

The girls showed great curiosity throughout the talk, asking thoughtful questions and engaging enthusiastically with the stories shared. It was a wonderful opportunity to bring local history to life.

The Easter Bunny paid a special visit to our school today.

Wind and hail showers could not stop the fun as everyone set off on an exciting Easter egg hunt. There was also a competition to see who could collect the most eggs, and the Macneil clan were victorious.

To finish the day, every child received a delicious chocolate egg.

A big thank you to AHSPA for helping keep the Easter Bunny well stocked with eggs. We are very grateful for your support.
