Academic Life in the Prep School
The Prep School covers Years 3 to 6 (children aged 7 to 11) at Abbot’s Hill, an independent day school in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. Academic life here is vibrant, purposeful and genuinely enjoyable. We set high expectations as a matter of course, but we achieve them through curiosity, creativity and confidence, and not through relentless pressure.
Walk into any Prep classroom and you will find engaged minds at work, enthusiastic teachers and a shared belief that loving learning and achieving highly are not opposites. They go hand in hand.
Years 3 and 4
We strike a careful balance between developing independence and providing the individual support each child needs to achieve their best. Our dedicated Form Teachers build close relationships with their pupils, keeping a careful eye on progress and wellbeing throughout the year. We track each pupil’s progress closely, enabling us to provide targeted support exactly when it is needed — and to stretch those who are ready to go further.
Class sizes in the Prep School average 14 pupils, ensuring that every child receives genuine individual attention and that their teacher truly knows them.
Years 5 and 6
By the end of Year 6, our pupils are academically confident, intellectually curious and well-prepared for the step into the Senior School at Year 7 — whether they have been with us since Reception or have joined us along the way.
The Prep School Curriculum
Every day, our pupils embrace a rich variety of intellectual, creative, musical and physical opportunities. Our curriculum strengthens core foundations in literacy and numeracy, introduces children to new languages, fosters artistic expression and promotes a lifelong love of sport and wellbeing.

French is taught as a specialist subject from Reception onwards, building progressively through the Prep School. Music/Drama, PE, Games and Swimming are also taught by specialists throughout, bringing dedicated expertise to these key areas of learning.
Our goal is straightforward: every child feels motivated, supported and empowered to achieve their personal best — and then to go a little further.
How we support and track progress
We never place a ceiling on what our children can achieve. We set the bar high, we back our pupils wholeheartedly, and we make sure they always have the support they need to rise to meet it.
Children who are finding an area challenging receive targeted support from their Form Teacher and, where appropriate, from our Learning Support department, which is experienced in working with pupils with dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD and other learning differences. Those with natural academic flair are stretched through extension activities that deepen their thinking and broaden their horizons.
Progress is communicated to families through written reports and parents’ evenings, both twice in each academic year, alongside informal conversations with Form Teachers whenever needed. We believe that the best outcomes happen when school and home work together — and we make it easy for families to stay informed and involved.

Preparing for Senior School
Academic life in the Prep School is designed with one eye always on what comes next. By the end of Year 6, our pupils are well-prepared for the move into the Senior School at Year 7 — academically, pastorally and socially. The transition is smooth and well-supported, and the vast majority of our Prep pupils go on to thrive in the Senior School, where their strong Prep foundations show in everything they do.
The Abbot’s Hill Senior School was named The Sunday Times Parent Power Independent 11–16 School of the Year 2026 — recognition of the outcomes achieved by pupils who began their journey here in the Prep.
