Year 7 Entry 2027

Starting Year 7 at Abbot’s Hill in September 2027

11+ entry for September 2027: five years to GCSE in a co-educational independent school where every pupil is known.

Choosing a senior school is one of the most important decisions you will make for your child. At Abbot’s Hill, the Sunday Times Independent 11-16 School of the Year in 2026, Year 7 is a main point of entry to our Senior School, and each year we welcome new pupils from local primary and prep schools across Hertfordshire to join those moving up from our own Prep School.

Abbot’s Hill is an independent co-educational day school for boys and girls aged 4 to 16, set in 76 acres of grounds in Hemel Hempstead and part of the Mill Hill Education Group. Joining in Year 7 gives your child five years with us: two years of broad Key Stage 3 study, followed by three years of GCSE courses. Pupils leave us at 16 for sixth forms and colleges of their choice.

With small class sizes (maximum 16-18 pupils per class) our teachers know how each child learns and what motivates them. That close knowledge shapes everything from setting and subject choices to pastoral care and GCSE guidance.

What happens on the Assessment Day?

Candidates for Year 7 entry spend the day in the Senior School with our staff, alongside other Year 6 applicants, and leave with a real sense of what being an Abbot’s Hill pupil is like.  They will sit the Quest 11+ Assessments (Maths, English, Verbal and Non Verbal Reasoning) online in the morning, followed by lunch and an afternoon of activities.

About Quest Assessments

Quest Assessments is an exam provider used by schools across the UK and internationally.  They are designed to ensure that schools can accurately identify the students who will thrive at their school. They are interesting, engaging assessments that allow candidates to show themselves at their best.

These assessments are all about candidates doing their best; please make sure that your child does not worry about taking them, they’re not trying to trick anyone!

Quest Assessments are just a way to see what candidates can do and figure out if the school is a good fit for them. They will use what Year 6 children have learned in school to answer the questions. Some questions might be challenging, so candidates will be encouraged to take their time and think about how to use what they already know to help them.

No specific preparation is required. We would simply encourage your child to come rested, bring a pencil case and water bottle and be themselves

Interviews

In the weeks following the Assessment Day, we will invite all candidates for an informal interview with a member of the Senior Leadership Team. Staff will ask about their interests, what they enjoy at school and what they are looking forward to. It isn’t a test, and there are no right answers – and it is the perfect time for candidates to ask any questions they may have too.

Scholarships

Candidates sitting the Assessment Day are automatically considered for an Academic Scholarship and top performers will be invited back to sit additional English and / or STEM assessments in January

All applicants may also apply for Specialist Scholarships in Art & Design, Drama, Music and Sport if they meet the criteria. Specialist Scholarship assessments take place in the week beginning 4 January 2027.

Why join Abbot’s Hill in Year 7

  • Small classes, close attention. Small class sizes (max 18 per class)  means teachers know how each child learns, not just what they score.
  • Results that speak for themselves. Consistently impressive GCSE results that far outperform national average
  • A co-educational education. Boys and girls learn side by side from age 4 to 16, preparing them for the mixed environments of sixth form, university and work.
  • Space to grow. Our 76-acre grounds give pupils room for sport, outdoor learning and [add a specific, e.g. Forest School, cross-country course].
  • Recognised for quality. [Insert exact title and year of the Sunday Times award.]
  • A clear route to sixth form. Abbot’s Hill pupils complete their GCSEs with us and move on to sixth forms and colleges of their choice. Our Year 11 team supports every pupil and family through that decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child need to prepare for the assessment?

No specific preparation is needed, although there are familiarisation tests available that will give your child an indication of the style of question that they will face. The assessments are set at a level appropriate for Year 6 and are designed to show us how your child thinks, not what they have been coached to do. A good night’s sleep is the best preparation.

What if my child is unwell on the day?

Please contact the Admissions team as soon as possible. We will arrange an alternative date for them to sit the assessments.

Can my child sit the assessment if they have a special educational need or disability?

Yes. Please let us know on the Registration Form so we can put appropriate access arrangements in place, such as extra time or a separate room. We will ask for a copy of any relevant reports, and may arrange a call with our SENCo to discuss.

Will my child have lunch?

Lunch is provided in the main school dining room. Please let us know about any dietary requirements when you register.

Do parents stay for the day?

Parents drop off in the morning and collect again at the end of the day.  Refreshments with senior staff are available at collection.  Parents will have another chance to meet the Head, Mrs Schanschieff, when their child comes back for their interview in the weeks following the Assessment Day.

When will we hear the outcome?

Offers will be sent by email and post on Friday 4 December 2026. Families will then have until March to accept their place.

How are scholarships awarded?

Selected candidates will be invited to apply for an Academic Scholarship based on their performance on the day. Specialist Scholarships in Sport, Art & Design, Music and Drama are open to all candidates provided they meet the published criteria, and candidates may apply for as many as they wish.  Scholarships usually carry up to a maximum fee remission of 20% and more usually 10%.

Is financial assistance available?

Bursaries may be available at Year 7 entry.  These are means-tested.

What happens if we register after the deadline?

Provided places are available, we will offer late applicants the chance to come and sit the assessment and meet a member of staff for an informal interview
