Your child’s first year at school

Reception is where children learn how to learn. We keep classes small so that every child is known, heard and stretched from the start.

  • Small classes, real attention. Reception classes are capped at 12 pupils. Your child’s teacher has time to notice what interests them, where they need support, and when they are ready for more.
  • 76 acres as a classroom. Our grounds are part of the Reception day, with regular time outdoors for exploring, building and learning about the natural world in Forest School classes and after school activities.
  • Specialist teaching from the start. Music, Drama, French, PE, Swimming, Forest School
  • One school, age 4 to 16. Children who join Reception can stay with us through to GCSE, without a further entrance test at 7+ or 11+.
  • Co-educational from the start. Boys and girls have learned together in our Prep School since September 2025.

What happens on assessment morning?

Our 4+ assessment is NOT a test, and there is nothing to revise. We want to see your child as they are: curious, chatty, shy or busy. Our experienced Early Years staff make sure every child feels at ease.

What your child will do

  • Play and work in a small group of children the same age, for around an hour;
  • Share books, toys and simple activities one-to-one with a member of staff.
  • Join in with a story, a song and some time outdoors.

What we are looking for

We observe how your child listens, talks, plays with others and approaches something new. We also look at early fine motor skills, such as holding a pencil or building with blocks. We are not looking for reading, writing or counting at this age.

How to prepare

  • Talk about the morning as a chance to play at a new school;
  • Make sure your child has had breakfast and a good night’s sleep;
  • Dress them comfortably, in clothes that can get a little muddy;
  • Tell us in advance about any additional needs, allergies or anything that will help them settle. We will make reasonable adjustments.

While you wait

Parents are welcome to stay on site and there will be refreshments available and the chance to meet and chat with Mrs Lopez Bernal, Deputy Head (Prep).

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child need to be able to read or write before the assessment?

No. We look at how children play, talk and engage, not what they already know.

My child is summer-born. Will they be at a disadvantage?

No. We take each child’s age into account and compare like with like.

What if my child is upset or won't join in on the day?

Please don’t worry; this is common at the age of three and four, and our staff are well used to it. If your child really doesn’t settle, we will simply arrange another time for them to return and have another go.  We understand that this is an unfamiliar environment, with unfamiliar adults and other children and we know that many children may struggle to truly be themselves in this situation.  If your child is already at a Nursery or Pre-School, or with a childminder, we may ask for a reference from them as they know your child better than we can in a short session.

My child attends Abbot's Hill Pre School / Nursery - do they need to register?

No.  In the vast majority of cases, children in Stepping Up and the Pre School are offered a place in Reception without need for further assessment.  Do let the School Admissions Team know that your child will be staying at the school so we can ensure we keep a place for them.

Do siblings get priority?

Where possible, and where we believe that Abbot’s Hill is the correct setting, we will endeavour to prioritise siblings.

Can my child join if they have additional needs?

Yes, we welcome applications from all children and our Learning Support Team is happy to speak to parents ahead of registration, to discuss any particular needs and whether we feel that we would be able to support them.  It is helpful if you are able to share any reports so that we can assess if we are the correct setting.

What happens if we register after the deadline?

We will offer the next available assessment date if places remain, or a place on our waiting list.

"Our son felt genuinely welcomed and thoroughly enjoyed each stage of the assessments, which were engaging and thoughtfully run.  I vividly remember him coming out saying it had been "the best day ever"; he was absolutely beaming after the scholarship assessments"

Prospective Parent

"What struck us immediately was how well the staff know every child as an individual. Our daughter settled in within weeks, and we put that entirely down to the warmth of the teaching team."

Current Parent

“The oasis that the grounds offer (all 76 acres) and the sheer feeling of space and expansiveness”
