Abbot’s Hill commended in National Awards

Abbot’s Hill School is proud to announce that it has been commended in the Outstanding Educational Partnerships category of the Independent School of the Year Awards, recognising the school’s outstanding commitment to collaboration, community engagement and widening access to enriching educational opportunities.

The commendation celebrates Abbot’s Hill’s belief that education should extend beyond the school gates and reflects the school’s vision of developing active, compassionate citizens who make a significant and lasting contribution to others.

Over the past year, the school has significantly expanded its partnership programme, working with local state and independent schools, charities, care homes and families across Hertfordshire. A flagship initiative, the “Come and…” programme, has welcomed more than 600 pupils from 12 local schools to take part in free enrichment days in STEAM, the creative arts, sport and performance. Designed and delivered by specialist teachers, with support from Abbot’s Hill pupils, the programme removes barriers to participation while inspiring curiosity, creativity and confidence.

Beyond these events, pupils have volunteered weekly in local primary schools through the school’s InspirED Programme, supporting reading and numeracy, while others have visited Water Mill House Care Home to read, play games and perform for residents. The school has also introduced Hilltop Explorers, a free Forest School toddler group, alongside community family activity days, extending opportunities for local families to learn and explore together.

A defining feature of every partnership is the role played by Abbot’s Hill pupils themselves. As mentors, volunteers and ambassadors, they develop leadership, empathy and communication skills while discovering the value of service and the positive impact they can have on others.

Commenting on the recognition, Head Sharon Schanschieff said:

“We are absolutely delighted to receive this commendation from the Independent School of the Year Awards. Partnership is woven into the fabric of Abbot’s Hill. We believe schools have a responsibility to share their expertise, resources and opportunities for the benefit of the wider community, while enabling young people to develop the compassion, confidence and leadership that will shape their futures.

This recognition is a tribute to the enthusiasm of our pupils, the dedication of our staff and the wonderful relationships we have built with our partner schools and organisations.”

Abbot’s Hill will continue to build on this success during the next academic year by extending its partnership programme to even more local schools and introducing bespoke outreach workshops tailored to the needs of individual partners.

This commendation is a testament to Abbot’s Hill’s commitment to creating meaningful partnerships that enrich education, strengthen communities and inspire the next generation to make a lasting difference.
