Scales, Shells and a Python Called Alice — Jaws N Claws Come to School for British Science Week 2026

It is fair to say that today’s visitors were a little out of the ordinary — and we absolutely loved every single second of it.

As part of our British Science Week celebrations, we were thrilled to welcome the wonderful team from Jaws N Claws into school today for a truly unforgettable workshop. From Nursery all the way up to Year 6, every single pupil had the chance to come face to face with some of the most fascinating — and yes, occasionally slightly creepy — creatures on the planet. And the results were magnificent.

Cockroaches, reptiles, invertebrates and more made their way into our school today, each one more intriguing than the last. But the undisputed star of the show? Alice — a beautiful python who caused equal measures of wonder and wide eyes wherever she went. It is safe to say that Alice made quite an impression.

Throughout the workshops, children discovered extraordinary facts about each creature — their habitats, their behaviours, their diets and the vital roles they play in keeping our ecosystems healthy and balanced. The questions our pupils asked were brilliant — curious, thoughtful and genuinely impressive — and it was wonderful to see so many young scientists engaging so enthusiastically with the natural world.

Special mention must go to the brave souls who stepped forward eagerly to meet the animals up close — there was certainly no shortage of willing volunteers among our pupils. Our teachers, it must be said, presented a somewhat more mixed picture. Some threw themselves in with admirable enthusiasm. Others — and they know who they are — observed proceedings from a slightly greater distance than strictly necessary.

“The children were absolutely brilliant,” said one member of staff — from a safe distance. “The curiosity and confidence they showed was wonderful to see. And the questions they asked were genuinely impressive. Even if some of us found the cockroaches a tiny bit challenging.”

A huge and heartfelt thank you to the brilliant team at Jaws N Claws for bringing such an engaging, hands-on and genuinely memorable experience to our school. You helped us celebrate British Science Week in the most spectacular fashion — and you reminded us all that the natural world is endlessly, wonderfully strange and surprising.

We have a feeling Alice in particular will be talked about for quite some time!
