Moving on to Pre-Prep

One of the advantages of Abbot’s Hill Nursery is that children can move seamlessly into the Reception class when it is time for them to start school.

Our Reception class forms part of the Pre-Prep Department, a discrete area of the Prep School with its own entrance and play area. Reception to Year 2 are based here. The children will, of course, already know many of the staff as they are already involved in their teaching, and the grounds, Forest School and other areas of the school will already be familiar.

During the Autumn Term, Pre-School families visit Reception to meet the teaching team. This introduces them to the classroom environment Our Reception Teacher, collaborates with the Nursery staff to ensure a smooth transition. Together, they familiarize children with their new surroundings and help them feel at ease in this new setting. We’re committed to making the start of school a calm and welcoming experience for both children and families.

As the summer term draws to a close, we invite you to join us for an induction meeting with our Reception Teacher. This is a wonderful opportunity to share insights about your child—their personality, interests, and preferences—while learning more about how we support learning through the Early Years Foundation Stage. It’s also the perfect time to ask any questions you might have about your child’s exciting transition to school.

This special session gives children a chance to explore their new classroom, meet their teachers.. We walk them through what to expect on their first day so they know exactly what’s coming. For parents, it’s a relaxed opportunity to connect with other families—both newcomers and returning faces—and chat with staff. It’s a fun, informal gathering designed to ease those first-day jitters and send your child into school with confidence and excitement.
