Senior Admissions

Year 7 / 11+ Entry

Assessment for entry to Year 7 takes place in the second half of the Autumn Term. The Assessment consists of the Independent Schools Examinations Board (ISEB) Common Pre-Test and an interview.

For families looking for a Year 7 place in September 2027, this assessment will take place on FRIDAY 13th NOVEMBER 2026.

This is a whole day event, with assessments in the morning, followed by an afternoon of activities alongside potential classmates.

If you are looking for a Year 7 place for September 2026, please contact our Admissions Team via email admissions@abbotshill.herts.sch.uk or call 01442 240333 – we have a limited number of places available, and will be delighted to talk you through the admissions process.

Registration for a Place

To apply for a place at Abbot’s Hill in Year 7, parents need to:

  • Complete the Abbot’s Hill Registration Form here
  • Registration is confirmed with payment of a non-refundable fee of £120.
  • Please ensure that we have received your child’s registration by Friday 6th November 2026.
  • Register directly with ISEB online for the assessments.

It is also a good idea to sign up to the ISEB mailing list so you can stay informed about any updates or changes to the testing process.

Academic Assessments

We invite all candidates to an Assessment Day. This is a chance to gain a feel for the school, meet staff and current pupils and have some fun meeting other candidates during a variety of afternoon activities. In the morning, pupils will sit the ISEB Common Pre-test. After lunch, there will be activities where all candidates will meet each other and begin to form friendships which they will nurture throughout their Senior School education.

Prospective pupils sit assessments in:

  • Mathematics;
  • English (Comprehension);
  • Reasoning (both Verbal Reasoning and Non Verbal Reasoning).

These are all part of the ISEB Common Pre-Test (familiarisation tests are available online), which many independent schools use. If your child is applying to more than one school that requires the ISEB as part of their entrance process, they will only need to sit these assessments once.

Please note: We are aware that some candidates may take this assessment at another school or with their Prep school. Once registered with Abbot’s Hill, a pupil’s score will automatically transfer to us; candidates cannot resit the test.  Pupils sitting the ISEB Pre-Test elsewhere will need to have done so by our Assessment Day (usually mid November each year) and parents will need to share their code with us so we can access their results ahead of being invited to interview.

Candidates who choose to sit the assessments elsewhere are still warmly invited to attend our afternoon activities on the ISEB Assessment Day.

Interview

Pupils who perform well in these assessments will then be invited for a friendly interview with one of our Senior Leadership Team members. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to get to know your child beyond academic results alone – we’ll chat about their interests, hobbies, and what they are looking forward to most at senior school. This helps us to build a fuller picture of who each candidate is as a person. Pupils enjoy this opportunity, as it is also a chance for them to ask any questions they might have about the School.

Parents are all also warmly invited to meet individually with the Head and one of the Executive team. Please note that this meeting forms no part of the assessment process but enables parents to gain a greater insight into Abbot’s Hill and ask any questions they may have about the school.

The School will be in touch with your child’s interview date once the assessments are complete.

Year 9 / 13+ Entry

Parents of children at 13+ prep schools often appreciate the reassurance of knowing in advance which senior school their child will attend. With this certainty, pupils can enjoy their final years at Preparatory School with a clear pathway ahead. This is the main reason Abbot’s Hill is pleased to offer the option of applying for 13+ Deferred Entry.

Families wishing to secure a 13+ Deferred Entry place should submit their application by early November of Year 6

  • Complete the Abbot’s Hill Registration Form here
  • Registration is confirmed with payment of a non-refundable fee of £120.
  • Please ensure that we have received your child’s registration by Friday 6th November 2026.
  • Register directly with ISEB online for the assessments.

Please note that all applicants are automatically considered for Academic Scholarships, so there’s no need to complete a separate form.

Once the closing date has passed, we’ll be in touch with families to share the key dates and next steps in the admissions process. We don’t shortlist or screen applicants; instead, we believe every child should have the same opportunity to show us their strengths, interests and potential.

Entry to Abbot’s Hill is not selective and there is no pass or fail mark in the ISEB Pre Test.  We need to be sure that every student is going to be able to access our curriculum, but we welcome students each year with a wide range of skills and attributes and value each child’s likely positive contribution to school life. Getting to know every applicant as an individual is a vital part of this process.

ISEB Common Pre-Test

Applicants sit the ISEB Common Pre-Test, an adaptive online assessment covering English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Pupils usually take the test at their current school (where possible), or here at Abbot’s Hill in mid November. Please note that parents now register their child for this assessment, and we’ll guide you through each step. Pupils applying to multiple senior schools that use the Common Pre-Test will only need to sit it once. More information about the ISEB can be found here.

Interview

Informal interviews are held at school in November on selected dates. These relaxed conversations with a member of our Senior Leadership team help applicants get a feel for Abbot’s Hill, to share their interests and passions, and allow us to understand them as individuals.

Occasional Places

Moving to a new school can feel like a big choice. At Abbot’s Hill, we ensure that any child entering the school has the warmest welcome and feels settled as quickly as possible. We do have occasional places in some year groups in the Senior School, and if you are considering moving, we would recommend speaking to our Admissions Team and coming for a private tour of the school. We would love to meet you and show you our incredible School and would be happy to answer any questions your child may have about joining the school.
