Careers Day at Abbot’s Hill
Abbot’s Hill Careers Day gives senior students the opportunity to explore exciting pathways and gain valuable insights into the world of work.
The day began with an inspirational keynote speech from Ross Priday of Aviation Ambassadors. Ross shared stories from his remarkable career in the RAF, including his time flying with the Red Arrows and serving as their Chief Engineer. His experiences captivated the students and set the tone for a fantastic day of learning and inspiration.
Students then headed off to a variety of workshops tailored to their year groups.
Year 7 and Year 8
Our younger students took part in The British Airways Challenge, where they spent the day designing their own airline. Working in teams, they developed creative concepts and pitched their ideas to judges Mrs King and Mrs Robinson. Prizes were awarded to the winning team at the end of the day, celebrating their innovation and teamwork.
Year 9 and Year 10
Years 9 and 10 enjoyed a diverse programme of workshops led by industry professionals from a wide range of sectors. Each session had an interactive element for students to enjoy.
Students heard from:
- Patrick Davison, who spoke about his career as a sports journalist for Sky
- Adam Evans, who spoke about his career in structural engineering.
- David Gardner, who delivered two additional sessions about his career as an aviation firefighter, even allowing students to try on specialist equipment.
- Melissa Holian, who gave students an honest and engaging insight into life as a psychotherapist.
- Matt Johnson, who shared insights into his career in gastroenterology.
- Aine O’Donovan, who brought all things play to life while discussing her role as a play therapist.
- Ross Priday, who put the girls through their paces and helped them to ‘know thyself’
- Lilia Santos and Paola Mortali, who talked about their careers at Medik8.
- Leanne Steers, who discussed creative subjects and opportunities at Falmouth University.
- Paul West, who shared his experiences in marketing and running his own business.
Students also took part in an exciting Medical Mavericks workshop, where they explored careers in medicine through hands-on activities. They had the opportunity to practise taking blood, locating a heartbeat, carrying out ECGs and much more.
Mock Interviews
Year 10 students were also put through their paces with a series of mock interviews. Thirteen volunteer interviewers challenged students with some thought-provoking questions, helping them to develop their interview skills and confidence. The feedback from the interviewers was overwhelmingly positive, with many commenting on how impressive, articulate and engaged our students were.

Thank You
A huge thank you goes to all of our guest speakers and mock interviewers for taking time out of their busy schedules to support this event and inspire the next generation. The students gained so much from hearing about your experiences and career journeys, and your contributions have undoubtedly helped them think more carefully about their future pathways.
