As part of National Women in Engineering Day, the Science Department had a visit from female engineer, Sian Ebsworth from Bath University. Sian, who is currently studying mechanical engineering, gave a talk to Year 8 on Tuesday 21 June. She is currently on a placement at McLaren Applied Technologies and brought with her some interesting items that the company had developed. The group saw an artificial knee joint, an aerodynamic cycle helmet and a steering wheel from Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren F1 car. Her presentation was fascinating and gave an exciting insight into what engineering could do for us in the future.
Sian also helped with and judged a ‘cardboard challenge’ with Year 7 in their science lesson. They needed to design and build a model of a toy for a toddler, made out of cardboard and a marble. The winners were Kiera and Lily, Hattie and Amy, Mia G and Lily and Florence and Lilah.
