Black History Month 2021

Posted: 8th October 2021

Our Black History Month celebrations began with an inspiring and thought-provoking Senior School assembly led by Mrs Davison, Assistant Head and teacher of history, to highlight the contributions of two Black British composers not currently on school curriculums: Ignatious Sancho and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor.

The slogan for this year’s Black History Month is ‘dig deeper, look closer, think bigger’, and our Art and Design department is running an exciting competition to open up the conversation about inequality in the telling of history through statues and commemorative works. Pupils are learning about the work of Kehindy While and Mark Quinn in art lessons this month – two artists who have created art around the theme of reclaiming statues – and are invited to research and present the case and location for a commemorative statue of a Black British hero.

We are looking forward to sharing and celebrating the significant contributions of Black people in the UK through this competition, and to the other activities planned for the rest of the month and year.
