An all singing, all dancing Senior School Production

Wednesday 8 February 2017

Well done to all of the cast and crew for another amazing Senior School Production which took place last week (2-4 February) to sell-out audiences in the Judi Dench Theatre.

Hairspray is a lively musical, set in Baltimore in 1962, where Tracy Turnblad is on a mission to follow her dreams and dance her way onto national television. However, it is much more than just the story of a plump teenager who becomes a dance-show sensation. The story is about social outcasts, racial divides and perfectly encapsulates the society of the period. Hairspray is full of humour, larger than life characters, 1960s-style dancing and singing!

Miss Sparrow, Head of Drama at Abbot’s Hill, said “The production has been a joy to direct; the girls have been particularly enthusiastic about this production and have worked with such passion. As an Artsmark school, committed to delivering high quality arts and culture education for all our pupils, it is important to generate curiosity, awareness and tolerance of our varied cultural heritage; performing Hairspray is one of the ways we have chosen to explore this.”

Congratulations to the fantastic cast, backstage team and staff production team who worked extremely hard to create a fabulous musical.  A huge thank you to everyone who has been involved and supported the production, including Mr Boichat of Origin Studios Photography for the wonderful photographs.

We are delighted to have received such fantastic feedback:

After five months of tiring yet productive rehearsals, the entire cast and crew of Hairspray were thrilled to see their hard work pay off in the outstanding success that the shows proved to be. The show was such a fantastic success and is a credit to the talented singing, dancing and acting of the entire cast, as well as the music department and the professional band who made the show so unique; and, perhaps most notably, the efforts made by both Mrs Hindmarsh and Miss Sparrow to make the show such a spectacular event.” – Georgina, Year 10 pupil and part of the ‘Hairspray’ Stage Management team

Mambo moves and somersaulting dancers sent those famous, upbeat rhythms through the audience and the singers and supporting live band filled our theatre with the spirit of Hairspray.  The show was so inspiring due to such dedicated, talented performers.  It was a great sparkling production, perfect to liven up a February winter night!” – Beatrice, Year 7 pupil

“I was simply blown away by the sheer professionalism of the cast and crew. Rarely, if ever, have I seen such performances from the whole ensemble that displays such skill in acting, singing and choreography. How one school, that is not a professional drama school, can produce such talent in depth is quite beyond me.” Abbot’s Hill School parent
