The whole School community joined in the celebrations for Abbot's Hill's one hundredth birthday on 8 May 2012. The day started with a special Service of Thanksgiving at the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Albans attended by staff, pupils, governors, old girls and many friends of the School. We were also pleased to welcome the Mayor of Dacorum, Councillor Mrs Gillian Chapman and the Mayor of St Albans City and District, Councillor Aislinn Lee.

Sixth Form Scholarships

Well done to the following Year 11 pupils who have been awarded sixth form Scholarships.

Academic Scholarships have been awarded to Hannah F for North London Collegiate, Imogen Sh for St Albans High School for Girls, Ellie D for St Albans School and Rebecca J for Berkhamsted School - Rebecca also won a Sports Scholarship to Berkhamsted. Jessica W and Emily J won Drama and Art Scholarships to Berkhamsted, Isabella E has been awarded a Drama Exhibition to Berkhamsted and Katie P has been awarded a Drama Scholarship to Tring Park.

7th Annual Stephen Hawking Lecture and Black Tie Dinner

On Friday 27 April 2012, fourteen Year 11 pupils who intend to take AS level Science went to St Albans School for Boys to join approximately 100 other guests to hear the 7^th Annual Stephen Hawking lecture on The Physics and Chemistry of Fireworks given by Mr Richard Harrison who designs the annual Verulamium Park firework display.

On Tuesday 6 March the GCSE Music students took part in a Composition and Performance Concert. The evening started with an ensemble brass group featuring Kate J, Emily J and Mr Harrison playing the toe tapping tune of ‘House of Elliot' by J. Parker.

Year 3 Trip to the Verulamium Museum

Year 3 visited the Verulamium Museum in St Albans on 12 March.

The children dressed up for a Roman Market Day and each had to go to a different market stall including pottery, food, clothing and medical instruments and find out information.

Our Year 9 pupils will join thousands of teenagers across the country to create their own news website on the BBC. The BBC School Report is a national project that gives 11 – 14 year olds the chance to make news reports for a real audience.

Excitement in Reception

On Thursday 8 March the children in Reception enjoyed a puppet show from girls in Year 10. Cordelia, Sophie and Melissa told the youngsters the exciting story of Rapunzel. The children took an active part in the show and loved every minute.

Louisa wins second place in the ‘Next Brit Thing'

Congratulations to former pupil Louisa Haggerty, who won second place in the Classical category at the UK final of The Next Brit Thing - a music contest open to 11- 19 year olds which is backed by the UK Music Industry, the Brit Awards and the government.

Louisa, who would like to pursue a career in opera and classical singing, performed in the final at the Indigo2 on Monday 5 March.

St Nicks pupils meet with local author

Local author Lucinda Williams visited the junior department last week as part of our World Book Day celebrations.

Lucinda came to talk to staff and pupils and sign copies of her newly published book ‘Autolocus and the Pirate Ghost'. Lucinda's children attended Abbot's Hill School and the book is based on stories she used to tell them on the way to school.

Thursday 1 March was World Book Day. Girls in Year 5 and Year 6 came down to the infant block to read stories with children from Nursery to Year 2. It was lovely to see the different age groups mixing so well with each other.

Year 11 report on The Naked Scientists

On Friday 1 March, a group of Year 11 girls went to a lecture at St Albans School given by Dr Chris Smith, founder of the radio program “The Naked Scientists”. He gave us all an insight into his work, adding a humorous twist to some scientific questions asked by his listeners.

One question in particular that intrigued us was “How much fat would a person need to have on their stomach in order to stop a bullet?” As with all of the other questions Dr Smith wanted answered, he did the experiment, and the answer was in fact 75cm.
