FAQs
Who owns the school?
Abbot's Hill School Limited is a non profit making charitable trust, which uses any surplus it makes from its operation for the benefit of the school. The Board of Abbot's Hill School Limited acts as the Board of Governors of the school.
What do the Governors do?
The Governors are responsible for determining the strategic direction of the School and for appointing the Headmistress and Bursar. They are also responsible for making sure the school complies with its obligations as laid down by company and charities law and in accordance with the Company's Memorandum & Articles of Association. The Governors are unpaid trustees of the charity.
The Board of Governors meets once a term, holds an annual strategy day, an annual meeting with parents of the School and an annual meeting with the staff. In addition the Board has a number of subcommittees made up of governors and staff, which meet regularly in accordance with their terms of reference and report back to the Full Board each term.
Who are the Governors?
The Board usually comprises between twelve and fifteen governors at any one time. Typically a Governor serves eight to ten years. The Chairman is elected for a period of five years. It is usual to have at least four current parents serving at any one time, with at least one from Baird House, and one from St Nicholas House, whilst being careful not to have more than half the Governors recruited from current parents. We look for an appropriate balance of talent and professional experience amongst our trustees, and from time to time seek people with appropriate professional skills and experience to join us.
How might I become a Governor?
We usually recruit about two new Governors a year. Governors are vetted by a selection panel and are encouraged to attend training seminars organised by AGBIS. Parents who are interested in becoming a member of the Board of Governors should apply to the School Bursar, who is also the Clerk to the Governors. All parents of new pupils are contacted at the beginning of their second term, inviting those who might be interested to let the Clerk to the Governors know the skills which they could bring to the current Board, so that their names can be kept on file for such a time when an appropriate vacancy might arise. There are no elected parent Governors as is the case in other independent schools and parents who become Governors understand the need to distance any issues affecting their child's education from their role as trustee of the charity.
